Causes of Thyroid Imbalance

The thyroid gland is responsible and influences many metabolic processes in the body. The most common hormones produced by the thyroid gland are Triodothyronine and Thyroxine. These hormones shortly know as T3 and T4 provide assistance in regulating metabolism and growth in the human body.

Following 5 factors can lead to Thyroid imbalance in human body.

1. The deficiency of vitamin b12

2. Too much consumption of iodine or another reason can be, excess intake of synthetic thyroid hormone.

3. Inflammation of the gland: Yes, the inflammation in the thyroid can cause the thyroid gland to leak and release an excess of hormones, this caused the temporary hyperthyroidism to happen. This generally lasts for few weeks.

4. Lumps in the thyroid: These lumps in the thyroid gland can cause the secretion of thyroid hormones which depresses the chemical balance of the body.

5. Cancerous growths in the thyroid gland

Now lets head to the symptoms that starts to appear when an imbalance in the thyroid gland is caused but the thing to know here is, there are two types of thyroid imbalance, or in other words there are generally two types of condition a person can face when an imbalance occurs in the thyroid gland and both of these conditions 1. comes with deference symptoms.

1. Hypothyroidism:

This condition generally effects woman more than men and shows its worst face when becomes older, and this needed to be tackled and managed during the times of pregnancy. This situation generally occurs to the one who is suffering from underactive thyroid or the glands which control the thyroid functioning. There are many other causes which can lead to this serious condition in other words, the insufficient production of the hormones can lead to this condition.

2. Hyperthyroidism: This condition appears when there is an override of thyroid hormones in the blood. When this happens, the thyroid gland becomes overactive and starts to secrete more and more hormones which lead hyperthyroidism. In hyperthyroidism, there totally different symptoms are seen and they are treated in a different way. the general symptoms that you can face are weight gain depression, may also cause pain in joints, sensitivity to both heat and cold, a feeling of tightness in the throat, higher cholesterol levels, dryness in the skin and sometimes vision problems.

Post heart attack, cardiac muscles could recover with new treatment

Scientists have identified a new way to repair the damaged heart muscles and also recover almost all of its pumping function after a heart attack.

During a heart attack, the organ is starved of oxygen and the muscles are damaged. The body responds by sending in immune cells to clear up dead and dying cells, but these cells themselves cause further inflammation in the already damaged heart further leading to heart failure.

For the study, published in Journal of Clinical Investigation, the team injected a protein called VEGF-C in mice after heart attack.

They found that the VEGF-C treatment promoted growth of a network of vessels which are part of the lymphatic system. The extra lymphatic vessels allow the immune cells to be quickly cleared after helping to repair and clear dying and dead cells, before they can cause significant damage from inflammation.

This treatment led to better healing in the heart and better recovery of the heart’s pumping function after a heart attack, according to the team.

Further, after clearing away macrophages, the first line of immune cells that start the healing process, other immune cells called Tregs could then be allowed into the injured muscle, to further help the heart to repair and recover.

“We started looking at the lymphatic system in the heart a few years ago – we could never have known how pivotal it might turn out to be for heart repair,” said Paul Riley from University of Oxford.

“This research has allowed us to start a drug discovery programme to develop drugs to promote the growth of lymphatic vessels and quickly clear immune cells. We hope to get a treatment we could give to people after a heart attack within five to 10 years,” Riley added.

Deaths due to cardiovascular disease up in rural areas of India: Study

While cardiovascular disease is the cause of over a quarter of Indian deaths each year, in a counter-intuitive trend, the mortality rates for rural populations due to this condition have surpassed those in urban areas, according to a new study, published on Friday.

The study is titled “Divergent trends in ischaemic heart disease and stroke mortality in India from 2000 to 2015: a nationally representative mortality study”. Cardiovascular disease caused 2.1 million deaths in India in 2015, over a fourth of the total. For those aged between 30 and 69 years, nearly 70% of the deaths were due to ischaemic heart disease — caused by narrowing of the arteries, a condition that often culminates in fatal heart attacks.

For that age bracket, the probability of dying from that cause increased from 10.4% to 13.1% for men and from 4.8% to 6.6% for women. “Although ischaemic heart disease mortality at ages 30–69 years was lower in rural areas compared with urban areas at the start of the study, rural rates rose rapidly, surpassing urban rates by 2015 in both sexes,” the study found.

“The assumption is that urbanisation is leading to rising rates of heart disease. But in fact, what we showed is that it’s the rural areas of India that had an increase in ischaemic heart disease mortality. In the urban areas, it’s been flat or there’s been a modest decline. That suggests a significant role for untreated hypertension or undertreated diabetes,” Prabhat Jha, director of the Centre for Global Health Research at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and senior author of the study said.

This research is based on data from the Million Death Study, a large-scale exercise that has been in progress in India since 2001 and was conducted in collaboration with the Registrar General of India and medical agencies in the country.

Another significant finding was that younger adults, especially those born after 1970, have the highest rate of death due to heart problems caused by narrowing of the heart’s arteries.

“As India has gotten fatter, including in the urban and rural areas, hypertension and diabetes have increased substantially, but the treatment for those have lagged behind. That might be what’s at play here,” Jha said.

The study also examined prevalence of death due to stroke and found “the probability of dying from stroke decreased overall, but increased in India’s North-Eastern states, where a third of premature stroke deaths occurred and only one sixth of (India’s) population lives.

Home Remedies for Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep. This leads to daytime fatigue, poor performance, tension headaches, irritability, depression, and various other problems.

Insomnia is generally of two types: acute and chronic. Acute insomnia is usually more common and lasts for days or weeks. Chronic insomnia, on the other hand, lasts for months or even longer.

There are a variety of causes including stress, anxiety, psychotic disorders, poor sleep habits, disruptions in sleeping environment, life changes, caffeine or other stimulants, chronic pain, breathing difficulties, and certain medical conditions such as arthritis, heart failure, acid reflux, and others.

It can also be a side effect of certain medications such as corticosteroids, alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, and more. There are few simple home remedies to get sleep.

1. Cumin Seeds

Cumin is a culinary spice with medicinal properties that aid in digestion. In traditional Ayrvedic medicine, it has been used to induce sleep. Cumin oil, too, has a tranquilizing effect.

2. Nutmeg

Nutmeg has sedative properties and works as a natural sleep aid.

3. Saffron

Saffron also has mild sedative properties that help treat insomnia.

4. Chamomile Tea.

5. Bananas

Eating a banana can be useful in combating insomnia because it contains an amino acid called tryptophan that helps raise serotonin levels, which help regulate sleep patterns. It also will elevate your mood and help regulate your apetite. Minerals like iron, calcium, and potassium present in this fruit also help with sleep.

6. Warm Milk

Warm milk is an excellent home remedy to relax your mind and body. Moreover, like bananas, milk contains tryptophan that promotes sleep.

7. Fenugreek Juice

Fenugreek ( Methi) reduces anxiety, insomnia, and dizziness.

8.  Valerian

Valerian is a medicinal herb with sedative and muscle relaxing properties. It induces relaxation and sleep.

9. Hot Bath

Taking a hot bath or shower about two hours before going to bed can be of great help in treating insomnia. It works as a good bedtime ritual to relax your body and soothe nerve endings. For better effect apply oil to head and body if you want.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey

Apple cider vinegar contains amino acids that relieve fatigue. Plus, it helps break down fatty acids that release tryptophan. Honey, too, promotes sleep by raising your insulin and causing a release of serotonin, a brain chemical that helps regulate sleep/wake cycles.

Autism: What We Know

Although we don’t know why these rates are rising, part of this increase may actually be a good sign that we are doing a better job at diagnosing autism. Catching autism early and getting children treatment quickly can make a huge difference in their and their families’ long-term quality of life. This Autism Awareness Month, make sure you know what to look for and how to help the children you love so that you can help provide the support they and their families need.

What causes autism isn’t known, though studies have ruled out certain potential causes. Many studies have affirmed, for example, that there is no link between vaccines and autism. The most recent evidence suggests that something that happens before, during or soon after birth is probably the main cause. One new study published just last week suggests that changes in brain tissue and improperly developed brain cells can be seen in very young children with autism. This new data suggests that disrupted genes may be interfering with brain development during mid to late pregnancy, leading later on to the symptoms of autism. Children with other genetic disorders like fragile X syndrome or who have siblings with autism are also at increased risk. However, environmental or even infectious factors are also being investigated as potential contributors, as well.

Until we have a better understanding of what is causing autism, it will be hard to determine how to develop effective treatments. There is currently no cure for autism, but interventions early in a child’s life – especially between birth and three years old – can significantly improve children’s social skills and development. Among other things, behavioral therapy and specialized educational programs can focus on helping children with autism talk and interact with others. Consequently, it’s important to identify potential warning signs as early as possible.

People with autism generally have trouble with social, emotional and communication skills that persist throughout their lifetimes. The symptoms of autism vary in severity along a spectrum, so mild cases may go undiagnosed for many years. Some signs and symptoms may begin during infancy. According to the National Institute of Health, early indicators can include no babbling or pointing by age 1, no single words by 16 months or two-word phrases by age 2, not responding to their name, losing language or social skills they previously had, poor eye contact, performing repetitive tasks excessively, or a lack of smiling or being socially responsive. Older children may have trouble making friends and having sustained conversations. They might also engage in less imaginative playing, have repetitive or unusual speaking habits, or have interests or preoccupations that are very specific and restricted. For unknown reasons, boys are almost five times more likely to have autism than girls.

Especially with good interventions and tailored education or therapy, many people with autism are able to learn to function socially and lead independent lives. There are also many resources that can help support and educate families with autistic children. You can find more information about autism hereand at the Autism Society’s website.
